We asked 20 bank CISOs what they’d cut if they had to drop one tool tomorrow. Want the list?
Hook Lab
The anatomy of a content hook.
A Hook Report isn’t a 60-page PDF nobody finishes. It’s a five-minute read with one job: make the reader want to talk to whoever sent it.
Below: an illustrative sample. Made-up numbers, real format.
The Consolidation Problem.
What 20 CISOs at banks told us about tool sprawl, board pressure and what they’d fix first.
say they run too many tools to see their risk in one place.
2What is your #1 security priority for the next 12 months?
3“We have eleven dashboards and still can’t answer the board’s first question.”— CISO, regional bank (sample quote)
4Methodology: online survey of 20 CISOs and heads of security at banks. Sample is directional and not intended to represent the whole market.
- 1The headline statOne number big enough for a subject line. This is the hook itself.
- 2The peer benchmark“Where do I stand?” is the question every executive secretly asks. We answer it.
- 3The peer quoteA real voice from someone just like the reader. Easy to share, hard to argue with.
- 4The honest methodWho we asked and how many. Being upfront about the sample earns trust.
Example hooks
Hooks we’d love to send.
A good hook is specific about who was asked, surprising about what they said, and generous about sharing it. A few examples of the format:
22 SaaS CFOs told us which line item they’re quietly cutting first. It isn’t headcount.
Most of the 3PL ops leaders we surveyed blamed peak-season failures on something they’d already budgeted to fix.
The nurse-retention program 15 hospital CHROs rated most effective is also the cheapest. Want to see it?
We asked 25 DTC CMOs which channel lost them the most money this year. The answer surprised us.
18 plant managers told us how much unplanned downtime really costs them per hour. Curious how you compare?
Example hooks to illustrate the format. Not findings from real studies.
The hook test
Four questions every hook must pass.
- Would they forward it? If the reader wouldn’t send it to a colleague, it isn’t interesting enough.
- Is it about their world? Not your product, your funding or your awards.
- Can they get it anywhere else? If it’s on Google, it isn’t a gift.
- Does it lead to your problem? The best hooks open a conversation you’re uniquely placed to continue.
